National helpline

Alternatives is a charity based in East London, England. We meet the need for a confidential environment where anyone with a crisis pregnancy can be helped to reach a decision and where their right to choose is respected at all times.

Where can I get a pregnancy test?
  • your GP (although not in some areas)
  • your local family planning clinic
  • your chemist (at a cost)
  • your local pregnancy counselling centre (that's what we are)
When can a test be done?
  • The earliest a pregnancy test can be done is on the first day of a missed period. You will need an early morning sample of urine which, if present, will have the highest concentration of the pregnancy hormone (HcG). Collect the urine in a clean container. Specimen bottles are available from chemists.
Can I do a test at home?
  • Yes. These tests are available from chemists. It is very important to read the instructions and follow them carefully. If in doubt about your result, have your test confirmed at your local pregnancy counselling centre.
If I have a test done at a pregnancy counselling centre, will anyone be told about the result?
  • Your result will be given to you in writing. No-one else will be informed as it is a confidential service.
If I am unhappy with my result, will I have the opportunity to talk about it with someone?
  • The counsellor who does the test for you will be available for as long as you need to talk about your result.
